Next Green Day album likely to arrive in 2008

January 6th, 2007

BillieGreen Day’s next album is not likely to arrive until 2008, according to a new interview with frontman Billie Joe Armstrong in British rock magazine Kerrang!. When asked whether the band’s follow-up to its enormously successful American Idiot CD would surface in 2008, Armstrong replied, “That’s probably a fair estimation, yeah.” Armstrong did say, however, that the punk trio has been working on songs since the summer, adding that the new material is “pretty mind-blowing…we’re getting moments where the stuff is so good that it gives us the chills.”

Armstrong added that the band wants to make an album that isn’t “in any way a reaction to American Idiot…in no way do we want to make music that feels like we’re cashing in on our past success.”

Video: U2 & Green Day – The Saints Are Coming

January 1st, 2007

Directed by Chris Milk of Radical Media, this video was produced to raise funds for Gulf Coast musicians affected by the Hurricane Katrina disaster.

The music video shows the two bands playing at the Abbey Road Studio and at the Louisiana Superdome (though the footage from the live performance at the Superdome has been overdubbed with the studio version of the song), intermixed with news footage of the displacement of residents after Hurricane Katrina in New Orleans. The second half of the video shows an alternate history in which George W. Bush redeployed troops and vehicles from Iraq to New Orleans to help victims of the hurricane, with the military personnel fulfilling the titular role of the “saints.” In the words of the director, this was done to “make a commentary on the Katrina disaster … from the standpoint of how things can and should be done in the future.” See the video inside article.
